Lancaster Central Market & the Newspaper Reader

We overnighted in Lancaster at Meduseld Meadery (poor Doug!); in the morning we walked into Lancaster proper to visit the Lancaster Central Market and have breakfast. The LCM is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the United States, dating to the 1730s. It was officially chartered by King George II, first operating as an open-air market, then using small sheds, then the Romanesque Revival building it’s now housed in was built in 1889. 60 vendors sell a variety of foods and products, many featuring Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch goods, no surprise.

Nearby is the J. Seward Johnson sculpture Newspaper Reader. This very detailed and textured sculpture honors Lancaster’s long newspaper history; the sculpture includes detailed recreations of Lancaster newspapers from the 1969 Moon Landing and 1979 Three Mile Island Accident.
