Baltimore Museum of Art

The Baltimore Museum of Art was founded in 1914 and has nearly 100,000 items in its collection. If you’re a Henri Matisse fan, you’d be in heaven – they have more than 1,000 of his works.

And the price is right for a visit — admission is free (though some special exhibits are ticketed). We both found the museum to be rather understated, with nothing especially flashy on display in the European galleries, and thus the quiet elegance of the paintings and sculptures provided a peaceful respite from the busy city outside.

The Pierre-Auguste Renoir featured above, On the Shore of the Siene, 1879, was tiny at at just 8 3/4 x 12 inches. Below are some of our other favorites.

Claude Monet’s Charing Cross Bridge, Reflections on the Thames, 1899-1904. Monet made 35 paintings of this bridge.
As always, I just love some close up detail of a Monet!
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Child with Hoop, 1875.
Alfred Sisley, Poplars on a River Bank, 1882.
William Lamb Picknell, Paysage (A Winter Day in Brittany), 1881.
Jackson Pollock, Water Birds, 1943.
I’m used to John Singer Sargent’s elegant portrait paintings, so I found this highly unusual! A Backwater at Henley, 1887.
I’m not familiar with this artist, Jennie Augusta Brownscombe, but I liked the imagery, and, of course, the cat! Love’s Young Dream, 1887.
