Scenes from the Coast of Louisiana

We didn’t spend much time in Louisiana — a dash to the coast to do a little birding, see some Rugby, and spend a day in New Orleans before turning northward again.

One of my new favorite things to do is to ask Doug if he wants to visit something that he’s conflicted about. Here we have the “World’s Largest Ronald Reagan Statue,” which ticks both the list of US Presidential sites and the list of absurd attractions. But then, it’s Ronald Reagan. A brief internal struggle ensued, and you can see the results.

We went to see the NOLA Gold vs Anthem Rugby Carolina rugby match. Anthem is a new team who lost their first game 13 to 46, so we weren’t expecting too much in terms of competition. However, they did manage only a 19 to 34 loss on this, their second game. It was still fun to watch, with some exciting plays. Note the lack of helmets in this photo. On the plus side, look at those leg muscles!

The sunset over Lake Pontchartrain. In the distance you can just make out the causeway, which, at 24 miles, is the longest bridge over water in the world. We drove the van over it, and fortunately it was not a windy day!

I just love the Spanish Moss on the live oak trees, which we’ve seen all over the southeastern portion of the United States. The setting sun filtering through it was lovely.

The feathers on this snowy egret are amazing!

I know it’s not the best picture, but the colors on this red-headed woodpecker are so vibrant!

A bald eagle surveying his kingdom.

Northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

Carolina chickadee.

A killdeer — look at those stripes!

  1. Love the bird pics, great job. I also love the cover photo on this post, which you didn’t mention in the narrative. Beautiful shot at sunset.
