by I felt like I spent our entire visit to the Miniature Museum of Greater St. Louis with a smile on my face. It’s hard to describe the wondrous sites within, but the website says “the imagination is on overload,” and I’d agree with that assessment.
The museum has more than 6,000 square feet jam packed with miniatures – even in the museum’s bathrooms!
The collection is primarily made up of dollhouses with extraordinarily detailed decorated interiors and exteriors, but there were also cases of dolls, furniture, trains and other knick-knacks –– all in miniature, of course. Many have built-in lighting and other effects, with no detail being too small to be overlooked.
There was a wide variety of miniatures on display, from a creepy haunted mansion to a medieval armorer’s shop. There were even a couple of risqué items! Many of the small rooms were donated by builders over the years (or by their estates), while others were built as demos during classes on miniature-building. Some larger displays were constructed by teams of designers, with each individual creating a room in a house.
The museum, which opened in 2001, also has a gift shop, a store offering model furniture and supplies, and a reference library, and periodically offers classes in building miniatures.
