Westmoreland Museum of American Art

We used the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, as a stopping point on a long drive. Its origins date back to 1949 when local resident Mary Marchand Woods bequeathed her estate to establish The Woods Marchand Foundation so that her community could have a cultural institution. This developed into the museum, which opened its doors ten years later.

Though small, we did enjoy the items we found on display there. As always, I looked beforehand to see what was there to make sure we didn’t miss anything. The museum’s website, however, returned all kinds of positive hits in the collection for artists that we’re interested in, but no indication if any of the works were actually on display in the museum. It turns out most of the artists we were most interested in weren’t on the walls, so the museum was a little less exciting than I thought it would be.
