Irises at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

We went to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska, Minnesota, hoping to get some birding in, but we didn’t do very well. I went in hoping that we would see some new lifers since is the farthest north we have been, and while we saw a fair number of birds, there were from a limited number of species. Doug did spot what he presumed was a red-eyed verio on a branch directly overhead, but it was hard to make a definitive identification.

However, we did find an iris garden in full bloom, so that was delightful (and you can see in the cover photo just how delighted Doug was!).

The Arboretum is on 1,200 acres and is part of the University of Minnesota. It has grown quite a bit since its humble beginnings on 160 acres in 1958, but now it “is the largest, most diverse, and most complete horticultural site in Minnesota.”

We heard that juvenile barred owls had been spotted in a wildflower garden, so we made our way over. Right away we heard this guy making a ruckus (interestingly, the call of a juvenile barred owl is very different from that of a mature owl), but it took a bit to find him. Doug’s the one who spotted him. He kept himself well-hidden in the leaves, though, so most of my pix are pretty crappy. We were still thrilled to see him, though!
Dragonfly.
Sorry-not-sorry for another egret picture, they will never get old for me!
I just love the color of a yellow warbler!
