Adventures in Amish Country

We’ve both been to Amish country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania several times, but this time we went to the Amish Farm and House for a tour. The farmhouse dates to 1805, when Isaac and Mary Evans began construction on their home. Over the next 150 years it had many owners, “but all its residents, Quakers, Mennonites, and Amish, operated the farm as a quintessential Pennsylvania German farm.” The 25-acre property had been used as farmland since 1715.

Unfortunately, today the farm shares parking space with a Target, Pet Smart, and many other stores, which rather detracts from the experience.

Yes, the Amish celebrate Christmas, but those Christmas gingerbread decorations still seemed way out of place. The stone for the house was quarried on the property.
The Amish limit connection with the outside world, which means they can’t plug in to electricity, internet, or phones from their homes. This special phone is permissible in some orders to use for business purposes – from a special shed outside the main home!

In 1955 a play featuring the Amish, Plain and Fancy, was a Broadway hit, and local tourism soared. A local entrepreneur opened the farm for tours so that outsiders (whom the Amish call “English,” whether they are or not) had a place to learn about the Amish way of life. The farmhouse tour was the first Amish tour in the United States.

The tour only lasts about 30 minutes, and then there are several outbuildings that can be explored on your own. Given the plain and simple way of living, you can guess that the tour isn’t especially exciting, but it was still interesting to listen to the stories and explanations.

To give ourselves a full Amish experience – and only for this reason – we stopped at Bird-in-Hand Bakery because it was rated best for whoopie pies. Whoopie pies are made of two round pieces of cake (usually chocolate, but other flavors may step in) with a sweet, creamy frosting sandwiched between them. Yes, please. They are an Amish tradition, and, in fact, there’s a good argument they were actually invented by the Amish.

Did we also get more shoofly pie?  Maybe.

Whoopie pie, I think I love you. Especially the red velvet, yummmm.
We didn’t need to buy red beet eggs (another Pennsylvania Dutch tradition) because Doug’s mom makes ‘em. They are hard boiled eggs cured with beets, beet juice, vinegar, and sugar. I can barely stand to look at them. It’s an abomination. Doug loves them.
The gift shop featured lots of locally made Amish quilted wall hangings.
Amish Children Walking by Sam (in the gift shop area).
A bedroom in the farmhouse.
Women’s Amish clothing is plain and of dark colors. Some groups can wear short sleeves, but never sleeveless. Clothing is fastened with snaps, hook-and-eye, or straight pins – buttons are too decorative.
An Amish Bench Wagon. Each family in an Amish church district takes a turn hosting Sunday services. The benches arrive on Saturday for setup. The guide said that weddings are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays because the bench wagon is available to travel on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I watched the movie Witness, featuring Harrison Ford as a Philadelphia cop hiding out from his corrupt colleagues and Kelly McGillis as an Amish widow who finds him sexy. It was fine, though I think it would have been better to leave the sexual tension as just simmering. Affiliate link.
Is it wrong that I think the Amish children’s clothes are adorable? Yes, those are Crocs up front.
Amish Grace is a dramatization of the Amish school shooting that happened in 2006, in which five girls were killed and five critically injured. Kimberly Williams-Paisley plays the mother of one of the children killed, and she struggles with the idea that she must forgive the shooter and his family, but is not allowed to communicate with her own sister who was left the Amish community. There’s also a book of the same name. Affiliate link.
