Weisman Art Museum

The Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, came on my radar for its architecture, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.

The building was completed in 1993 and is situated on the University of Minnesota campus, on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

Its abstract design did nothing for me, though Doug, as per usual, was more delighted. I was very surprised afterwards to learn that it is “an abstraction of a fish and waterfall” (per their website). Really? Which part?

River Flats, Dewey Albinson, 1934.
Real Dad, Leslie Barlow, 2016.

The modern art museum has more than 30,000 items in its collection, but as is normal with this type of art for us, I floundered a bit as we went through while Doug found more to appreciate.

The museum, which dates to 1934, was renamed in honor of Frederick R. Weisman after his $3 million gift in 1990 towards the construction of the new building.

Standing Glass Fish, Frank Gehry, 1986. Gehry was the building architect! We had no idea he was an artist, too.
Cygne Sauvage de Nimes (Wild Swan of Nimes), Mary Abbott, 1955-65.
The Ascendants VIII (Local Natives), Wangari Mathenge, 2020.
Snow Block, Helen Frankenthaler, 1966.
World’s Fair Mural, Roy Lichtenstein, 1964. This mural was created for the exterior of the New York State Pavilion at the 1964-5 World’s Fair in New York City.
Timeline Strip Pieced Quilt, Chotsani Elaine Dean, 2022.
