Porter Sculpture Park

The Porter Sculpture Park in Montrose, S.D., is regularly rated as one of America’s best roadside attractions. More than 60 large-scale metal sculptures grace the site, all created by local artist Wayne Porter. Porter himself greets visitors to the site and continues to create new works. The site is nestled in tall prairie grass, with dozens of resident prairie dogs and birds also making their home on the site.

Porter works from his family farm and blacksmith shop 20 miles from the sculpture park, making transporting the multi-ton works projects in themselves!

This is the largest piece in the park — 60 feet tall.
Many works were whimsical.
The scale of the horse is not evident from this picture– it is over 20 feet tall.
Obligatory flower picture for Jen.
Signboards with poetry added context so some of the works.
“Ballerina” is a Cinderella tale.
This Eastern Kingbird and his mate built their nest in the mouth of a dragon statue, and dive-bombed anyone who got too close!
My first Western Meadowlark.
These prairie dogs are apparently art aficionados.
