Museum of Contemporary Art Denver

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is housed in a smallish but impressive space in downtown Denver. The works on display included intricate small-scale drawings, video and film, photography, sculpture, and cross-disciplinary works.

When I visited (on my alone-time in Colorado), the multi-disciplinary artist Gala Porras-Kim had a solo exhibition entitled A Hand in Nature on display, focusing on the natural world in a number of works that were designed to evolve or degrade over the course of the exhibition. One of the works captured humidity from the air which was then slowly dripped onto a surface, while another was full of mold spores that were virtually growing before viewers’ eyes.

Out of an instance of expiration comes a perennial showing, 2024, by Gala Porras-Kim. Created by collecting spores from the British Museum and propagating them on cloth, raising questions about removing microscopic parts of the museum’s collection. Talk about living art!

Detail of Filogram Mural I. The work comments on the history of the cacao tree and its role in global trade and exploitation.
