Chihuly Garden and Glass

If you’ve been following along at all, you’ll know that I love Dale Chihuly glass pieces, and Doug tolerates me loving them. So when we were in Seattle for a short time, the only thing I cared about doing was going to Chihuly Garden and Glass.

The site sits just under the Space Needle, making for some interesting juxtaposition. It opened in 2012, and houses a garden area, a glasshouse, and interior exhibits covering 40 years of work. There’s also a theater showing six short films, all of which we watched (some of which you can watch on their website here). The video showing the almost haphazard way he assembles a chandelier was really fascinating (but alas, I could not find it to link).

The Glasshouse features a 100-foot-long installation, one of Chihuly’s largest suspended sculptures. It was worth it to stroll back through a second time to see it lit up at night like this!

The overall space is small, but I had read to try to coincide the visit with dusk so that the pieces could be viewed in different light. Our first pass through I was like “is this all there is?”

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I loved what I saw, but it didn’t even take an hour to go through –– including watching all the films!

We exited the site and came back an hour later, and the outside spaces seemed transformed. It was definitely worth the effort to see the before and after.

I love the look of the Persian Ceiling, and I love the shadows it casts.
