Leonard J. Buck Garden

The Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills, N.J. came on my radar as “one of the premier rock gardens in the Eastern United States”, and after our research for Japan Day back in 2020, I was excited about a Japanese rock garden.

I suppose I should have noticed the description of this particular garden omitted the word “Japanese”, but it quickly became obvious as we wandered through it that I had blundered. By “rock garden” it meant “glacial erratics” and “rock outcroppings”. Oops, not quite the same thing.

Set on 33 acres and dating from the 1930s, there were a number of trails to meander, lots of flowers, a small stream and some nice architectural features.

Though it didn’t knock our socks off, it was a pleasant 40 minutes, and I do always love a good tree.
