The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, CT, is relatively modern, dedicated in 1962 on the site of the previous cathedral, which had been destroyed in a fire. While the outside suggests a traditional religious structure, the explosion of color that greets visitors through their stained glass windows feels very modern, indeed. One can’t help but exclaim “wow” as the color bursts upon them; the stained-glass windows, 70 feet high by 14 feet wide, were crafted in Paris.
The cathedral was designed by Eggers & Higgins, known more for stone memorials like the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC, than for building cathedrals. The Cathedral soars 284 feet and has a stark exterior, using an International style version of the Gothic style. Behind the altar is the largest ceramic tile mural in the world, “Christ in Glory”; the alter felt a bit out of place, designed more for a Star Trek set.
The Cathedral also houses the largest pipe organ in Connecticut, with 6,878 pipes!
