Guinness Open Gate Brewery

Guinness is known worldwide for its classic stout, a favorite of beer drinkers who appreciate its full body and foamy head when served in old-school fashion from a tap at a local watering hole, or from a can with a special “widget” that stirs up the nitrogen to create a classic pour that’s as close as you can get to the offering at a pub.

While Guinness is headquartered in Dublin and has operations in many locales globally, there are only two “Open Gate” breweries where the brewmasters can experiment with recipes and serve unique beers to customers. One opened in 2023 in Chicago, and the other opened way back in 2015 outside of Baltimore. It was to this location that I journeyed in search of that Guinness magic.

At the location, Guinness commercially brews just one beer for wide distribution, its Baltimore Blonde ale. There is a restaurant and event space on site, a barrel room, and a very large outside beer garden during warmer months. They offer tours and tastings, as well.

I arrived in time for lunch, so made my way to the restaurant and ordered up a flight of four fresh experimental brews and an order of Scotch eggs.

After lunch, I did the brewery tour and tasting experience. Our guide gave us a history of Guinness Brewing, walked us through the brewery facility, and concluded with a tasting of four beers, including the Baltimore Blonde and the classic Guinness stout along with two other experimental beers.

It was a fun and educational experience! I ended up taking two canned “crowlers” home with me so that I could enjoy them later.
