by The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA is a regional museum with a focus on artists who lived and worked in Bucks County. It is named after author James A. Michener, who is a native of Bucks County; Michener was a Pulitzer Prize winner who wrote more than 40 books such as Hawaii and Tales of the South Pacific. Michener and his wife were significant financial contributors to the establishment of the museum.
The museum is housed in a former 19th century prison, with the façade kept intact when converted to a museum in 1988. The museum is noted for it’s Pennsylvania Impressionism collection, most of which was not the type of Impressionism Jennifer expected, a la Monet; however, Opalescent Morning by Charles Rosen was a delight.
After the Rain by Rae Sloan Bredin, really evoked Bucks County for us, Jennifer having lived there for many years and had many walks along the canal.
The museum also includes a collection of Michener memorabilia, including books, manuscripts, working tools such as his desk and typewriter, awards, letters, etc.
